What are nightshade foods?

Recently, my wife and I had a brief discussion about nightshade plants and how certain health conditions can accompany diets that are high in nightshade foods. Since I had only very basic knowledge of nightshade foods, I wanted to deepen the investigation into the specific reasons for eating these otherwise healthy foods. In the course of my research, I have found that there are many articles, blog entries, and comment pages that seem to disparage nightshades and encourage them not to eat them at all, which takes into account the health benefits of these foods, we need to deepen these claims.

Nightshade is a term (classification) that refers to one of 2,800 different types of plants, including potatoes, peppers (all varieties except black pepper), aubergines, tomatoes, peppers and peppers, to name a few. The special thing about these plants is that they contain a special substance called alkaloids. Alkaloids contain nitrogen and are produced by plants to protect themselves from insects. In this way, the alkaloids are a natural defense mechanism that nightshade plants produce to protect themselves. Most of the research I have done has focused on steroid alkaloids and some of the potential health effects. One thing I want to point out here is that the observed adverse health effects only affect people who are sensitive to alkaloids or who already have an articular condition such as arthritis or gout. Although excessive consumption of nightshade food can lead to negative symptoms for everyone due to the alkaloid content, these symptoms usually stop as soon as consumption is reduced to a moderate level. That being said, steroid alkaloids tend to block an enzyme (essentially a substance that acts as a catalyst for the occurrence of a particular chemical reaction / function) in nerve cells called choline testerase. When steroid alkaloids accumulate in the body, symptoms such as muscle spasms, body aches, pains, tenderness, inflammation, and stiff body movements can occur. Again, this seems to only happen to people with known sensitivity or with an unusually high diet in foods containing this type of alkaloid (potatoes and tomatoes). There is also a connection with irritation to the walls of the digestive tract, including more serious conditions such as ulcers, diverticulitis, and polyps in susceptible individuals. People with arthritis or digestive problems are therefore advised to remove food from the nightshade or to strictly exclude them from their diet.

A 1980 study at Rutgers University found that potato alkaloids (steroid-alkoid type) resulted in decreased bone mineral content and decreased tissue mineralization in people who were on a potato-rich diet and decreased body weight (more with the decrease in bone content) connected no fat reserves, therefore unfortunately no favorable weight loss). Simply put, this research has shown that these alkaloids can contribute to the loss of calcium from bones and excessive deposition of calcium in soft tissues.

I thought it was worth mentioning because there are so many health problems with nicotine in tobacco. Keep in mind that many other additives in cigarettes besides tobacco and these substances are responsible for many health problems related to smoking, not to mention the means of ingestion that means inhalation of any kind. Smoke affects lung function. The fact is that eggplants offer many health benefits and people should not refrain from eating them due to the small amount of nicotine present.

In my opinion, there is no need to completely remove nightshades from your diet (unless you have real sensitivity), and you also won't get the health benefits that these foods can bring to your diet. Some of the benefits that tomatoes offer are high levels of vitamins A and C, which are antioxidants. They contain chromium, which helps regulate blood sugar and contains a large amount of potassium and B vitamins. Research has also shown that eating seedless tomatoes can also reduce the risk of kidney and gallstones. Peppers also have significant health benefits, including their high levels of antioxidants that lower cancer risk and support immune function. Bell peppers contain vitamin K and have a decent amount of fiber (1/2 cup cut red bell pepper per 1 gram of fiber). If you are concerned about sensitivity to alkaloids, it is best to see a doctor.
